The Free-Time Project
Artist Kate Lemay's beautiful jewel-like paintings are adorning the gallery wall through the end of the year in this ambitious exhibit that is only a small fraction of the work in this series, The Free-Time Project. What began as an exploration of what she could do to keep practicing art-making with two small children and a full time job has become a spiritual and artistic exploration that's taking on a life of its own. Kate's shown parts of the show in Los Angeles California, is showing here in Laconia now, and has long-range plans for the series which include a full exhibit of all 3780 paintings internationally in a museum show. You can watch a time-lapse video of her process here, or better yet, come in and see the 147 pieces in person. Kate will be here on Sunday the 8th of December from noon to 4pm to visit with people and talk about her work, and Heather Cone will be here playing her crystal bowls - a relaxing alternative to holiday shopping madness.
But the shop will be open, and full of fun gift ideas for even your most difficult giftee - come in and browse, ask for help, sit for a moment...The Studio is a little out of the way, but a lot out of the ordinary!

Avantacular: Eyedeas and Experiments in Languagescapes
Using language to create poetry that can be read aloud is an ancient practice. But using language to create poetry that is meant to be interpreted by the eyes is artist Andrew Topel's practice, and his visual poetry is in the gallery at The Studio through November 1st. Vispo (the short-hand version of "visual poetry") uses words and/or letters to create art that challenges the viewer's concept of both visual art and language.
Installation view of Andrew Topel's large prints |
On Sunday, October 13th, artist, musician and publisher Reed Altemus of Portland, Maine and Isaac Tyler, experimental sound artist, are teaming up for an afternoon of experimental sound and discussion of visual poetry and its relationship to electronic and experimental music. The Studio will be open from noon to 4pm and light refreshment will be provided. Call for more information.

Notes about Graceland, and Grace, and Caffeine
The current exhibit at The Studio is "Just Like Us Only Not" photographer Evelyn Lamprey's intimate look at Graceland, Elvis Presley's legendary home. Take a step back in time and see what makes Graceland both "Just like us" in it's scale and "only not" in some of its over-the-top decor. The images will be on display in the gallery through September. Come to the opening reception on September 12th beginning at 6 and listen to songs that Elvis might have listened to, and see the work of master barber Bree Henderson from Polished and Proper Barbershop and Shave Parlor, who is bringing Elvis-ishes to Downtown for the evening! For a limited time, you can indulge in a dessert special at Local Eatery, a peanut butter and banana Monte Cristo finished with homemade praline ice cream, local honey and candied local bacon - a delicious tribute to The King!
On Friday the 13th, The Studio is hosting a Trunk Show by Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture. For one day only, Grace's fun and funky up-cycled dresses and men's shirts will be available for you to try on and find the perfect one for your closet. Grace will be in Laconia from 2 pm until 7 pm Friday, then packs up to go to the Art Fair at the Squam Art Workshops in Holderness for Saturday night. She's offered to come back (!) in the winter to teach us how to make our own Folk Couture in a workshop; let me know if you might be interested.

"Scenic Roots" at The Studio
Artist Dan Daly installing "Scenic Roots" |
For the month of August, Dan Daly's exhibit "Scenic
Roots" is showing at The Studio. His work
is crafted from wood scraps left over from his work as an award-winning
set designer for the Winnipesaukee Playhouse. These intimate, often

and his vision as an artist.

Salons, Sunsets and Sideshow Banners
A recent view from the top of the garage |
Sunset Watching Parties continue to be popular, and the next one is this coming Tuesday, July 16th. Join the crowd on the top of the municipal parking garage in Laconia (the entrance is off Beacon Street East) around 7:30 for bubbles, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk and who knows what else. The next one is in two weeks, on July 30th...see you there!
Toni-Lee Sangastiano's exhibit "Ballyhoo: Sideshow Banners and Circus Portraits" has been popular, and is in the gallery through the 26th, when there is a closing reception for the artist from 5-7pm. There will be refreshments and music, and Toni-Lee herself will be here to answer questions.
I'm expecting two shipments this week of brand new goodies for the shop. Think party, party, party! I'll share pictures when I can....

Gerald Auten: Reckless at The Studio 4/18 through 5/31
Studio interior (Gerald Auten) |
Artist Gerald Auten is showing his large abstract graphite drawings at The Studio through May 30th. Auten, whose work is also currently on exhibit at Hood Museum, is an award-winning artist and faculty member at Dartmouth College. The surfaces of Auten's work are lovely, rich, and deep, and take months to develop. To allow viewers to fully appreciate the drawings, the work will be pinned directly to the gallery wall at The Studio without the intervention of traditional framing with glass. An opening reception will be Thursday April 18th from 5-7pm at The Studio, 50 Canal Street.
Contact The Studio for more information, or with questions. 603-455-8008

"Terra Vegrandis" at The Studio
Artist Kirk Membry sees things in a big way. In his professional photography practice he is contracted by organizations such as the Mount Washington Observatory and NBC Sports to do 360 degree panoramic photos or "panos". In "Terra Vegrandis", his current exhibit, he takes the big picture and shrinks it to create the "tiny earth" prints that are featured.
In images that may conjure the familiar cover illustration of "The Little Prince", he gives viewers a playfully disorienting look at the world. The scale and perspective are both delightful and a little disarming. I think you'll have fun exploring these little worlds.
There is an opening reception for the artist this Saturday, March 16th, from 11am to 2pm. "Terra Vegrandis" is at The Studio through April 13th. Regular hours are 10am to 5pm Wednesday through Friday, Saturday 10am-3pm. For an appointment at another time, or with any questions, please call 455-8008.

"Enchanted Encampment" through 2/2/13 at The Studio
Artist Elizabeth Obelenus opens the 2013 Exhibit Calendar for The Studio
From the artist's statement:
"Navigation,
journaling, journals, storytelling, nighttime, the Milky Way, rivers that have
been dammed for industrial progress and women as an extraordinary power in
nature are themes that have informed my artwork for several years. I have also
worked with the image of crows as magical creatures because of their
intelligence and their dark bodies, and their preference to hang around human
habitation. The dark and crows have been powerful images of mystery for my art.
I
have created a fictional character named The Saintly Tourist, whose journey is
based on Lewis and Clark’s expedition out west, following rivers and camping
out for two years in western America. I was enthralled by their story and the
journals they kept and the relatively peaceful passage through other people’s
lands. The Saintly Tourist is someone who is respectful and reverent toward the
landscapes she passes through. I create objects, usually 3-dimensional, often
using found objects to evoke aspects of her story. The artwork, rather than being
a literal transcript, is meant to be an evocative, poetic reference toward the
Tourist’s journey."
"Enchanted Encampment" is on view through February 2nd at The Studio. There is a reception for the artist Saturday January 12th from 11 am to 2 pm, with live music by Abbie Morin beginning at noon. Contact The Studio with questions or for more information.
