"Is She Pretty?"

“The more cultivated a people becomes, the more decoration
disappears…” declared modernists a century ago. Yearning to
become a cultivated society ufettered by gender roles, we have been
vanquishing everything nonessential from all but our most private
spaces ever since. Gone are the scrolled, the brightly patterned and
the hand carved objects of questionable use. Do we miss them?

These paper lanterns and other assemblages, made from ephemera
collected over the years in my studio, are part confession and part
revolt against a lingering prejudice regarding ornamentation. They
are also a revelation that my public persona as a feminist and a
modern “edited” person is not the whole story of me.

I assert that pretty things are necessary to the human soul. They form
a visual language of particular intimacy that can express joy, loss,
irony and even anger; a mother tongue we lost as we grew up and,
barely remembering, we long to get back.

"Is She Pretty?" opens Friday January 20th at The Studio, 84 Union Avenue Laconia NH. There is a reception for the artist beginning at 7pm, with live music by OMA performing "Funhouse Slide Parade". The Shop's New Look

Holiday Open House!

OH BOY! It's that time again - time for The Studio Holiday Open House! This year will be bigger than ever, and I've been stocking the shop with lots of goodies especially for the occasion. The Studio is the only shop in New Hampshire's Lakes Region carrying Flying Wish Paper -- if you haven't seen a demonstration, just ask. It makes a great stocking stuffer, hostess gift idea, Secret Santa gift...or New Year's ritual! I have several new artists whose work is available, and dozens of wonderful handcrafted things that will make someone (or someone like you!) very happy this holiday season. For the bacon lover in your life, Vermont artist Jesse Lundberg has made a series of bacon paintings and bacon eggs that are available only at The Studio. Local Etsy seller Lovely Squid is bringing some of her vibrant, comfy and 100% up-cycled Infinity Scarves, and I'll also have car organizers by Zooziis. Don't forget about the great sprinkle rings -- perfect for adding fun to your holiday outfits, or for giving to your favorite funky person!

This Month at The Studio

Crazy good times here at The Studio this month, starting with the Belknap Independent Business Alliance Meet and Greet here on Tuesday the 15th. Beginning at 6pm, come to The Studio to enjoy some refreshments and meet some of the local people you do business with.

On Friday the 18th, The Studio is hosting an art event with live music to celebrate artist Kyle Tetro's exhibit "Cycle Reactions". Mouth Flesh will be doing experimental noise, Cortex will be creating live dubstep/electro-music and Labor Pains brings acoustic punk. No charge, and plenty of free parking downtown. Doors open at 6, music begins around 7pm. Call 455-8008 for more information.

Friday, November 25th is known as "Black Friday" -- except here at The Studio where it's "Futon Friday"! Beginning at the reasonable hour of 10am, I'll be open, the futon will be open, the kettle will be on, and you're welcome to come chill out in the funky art atmosphere of The Studio. New this year: Bette Abdu, a certified Zentangles teacher, will be demonstrating this relaxing drawing meditation technique from 11 - 1. From 1-3 there will be live costumed models for drawing or photographing. You're welcome to bring a book, some knitting, or your urge to nap and hang out for a little while. Of course, if you were moved to bring cookies, too, that'd be awesome!

The Shop is full of great gift ideas for the holidays, too. From stocking stuffers that will delight, to original jewelry and art, do your holiday shopping at The Studio. Free gift wrap, and gift certificates with a free greeting card are available, too. Support a local business this season, and find that special something, too. It was a busy day at The Studio today -- artist Mike Lewis arrived ready to begin installing his floor to ceiling assemblage "Love Me", and a lot was learned. A few things:

I know more about ladder ergonomics tonight than I did this morning.
Mike has a great laugh and knows how to use it.
Keeping an extra charged battery pack for the driver is some of the best advice I ever got.
Screwdrivers come in way shorter sizes than I ever knew.
This is going to be one of the most interesting shows EVER!

I have no pictures of the Ladder Dancing that we did; this is probably a good thing. But you can see for yourself that The Studio is a happening place this month!

"Calm/Down": a low show

August is a wild, hot month. The weather is hot, the flowers that are blooming are full of hot color, people are impatient in traffic. There's rushing to finish work to start vacation and scheduling last-minute activities before vacation ends and work starts again. Against all this heat and rush, The Studio presents "Calm/Down", a show that's best seen from a sitting position, designed as a respite for the eye and spirit, a break in a busy month.

I hope people will come to The Studio just to sit and relax. The work is abstract and can be looked at without trying to figure anything out -- unless you want! I've extended the artwork's neutral palette into the gallery space by covering the futon in natural canvas with large black pillows and put a tin of stress-reducing aromatherapy balm and a candle, as well as a Tibetan singing bowl within easy reach of anyone who wants to take a few moments. This is a way to experience the art in an unusual setting with an unusual level of engagement. Most of the time, you walk into a gallery which is often a 'white box', and view whatever is on the wall without a pause -- walk in, walk out. The gallery at The Studio is in the middle of the space, and I'm inviting people to spend a moment in quiet to experience it however they'd like. I'll even make a cup of tea, or some espresso if that's your pleasure!

I can't believe that today is the last day of June already! The month flew by, and there's plenty to look forward to in July. Diane Seamans and Ron MacLean will be installing their photography-based work, "Cars, Rust & Nature", and there will be a reception for the artists on Friday July 15th from 5-7pm here at The Studio. Hope you can join us - there may be some special treats in store!

On Thursday July 7th from 5-7pm, The Studio is holding a meet-and-greet for the Circle Program, a mentoring and support group for at-risk young women. It's a great opportunity to learn about this program, as well as learn about the Women's Caucus for Art, which is collaborating with the Circle Program for this event at The Studio. The Studio is closed for the holiday weekend, July 1st-4th. I'll be open on Tuesday the 5th, so if you want a last chance to see Samuel Feinstein's gorgeous books, c'mon in! On Saturday, July 9th, The Studio will be at the Veggie Art Girl Boutique in Holderness, to help celebrate her 3rd anniversary with free ice cream, face painting and vendors of all sorts. If you haven't been yet, that would be a great time to check it out! It's located at the corner of Routes 3 and 175.

Binding & Discipline at The Studio

Leather and snaking, tightly wrapped cords. Draftsmanship and craft that's measured in millimeters. It's all part of this month's exhibit at The Studio,"Experiments in Restraint: Books Variously Bound". Artist
Samuel Feinstein of Chicago and Boston has created a breath-taking display of both fine and altered book bindings and original hand-done calligraphic pages that is both unusual & provocative.

The artist's devotion to both his craft as binder and the book as object is patently obvious. When required, his traditional bindings perfectly complement the book and its age and subject matter. "I listen to the book to see what structure and style of binding it calls for," says Feinstein in his artist's statement. His playful side is
evident in his altered bindings which create art-objects out of existing books, such as an edition of Samuel Johnson's writings sewn shut, with a knife embedded through the book.

Many of the books are for sale, and collectors would be wise to see what is offered. Sam has also brought some of his "early binding" efforts which are for sale in the Studio Shop. It's a wonderful opportunity to purchase one of his beautifully bound journals or sketchbooks as a gift for a graduate, a bridal memory book or a personal journal.

The opening reception for the artist is Thursday June 9th from 5-7pm and everyone's welcome. The Studio is located at 84 Union Avenue on the second floor, and is open Wednesday through Friday from 10-5,

Lots New at The Studio!

So many exciting things going on, and happy changes, and future plans,
Elizabeth and I are about full to burstin'! CM Judge's beautiful
installation, "INCARNATIONS", looks wonderful, and people who have
seen it already are amazed to fully enclose themselves in the piece,
"High is Our Calling". The opening reception is Thursday May 12th from
5-7pm, and there will be an additional installation just for the
evening of "Butterfly". CM is also inviting any artist to participate
in a collaborative international project, "The Artists' Love Song" as
part of her involvement in FemLink -- femlink.org will give you more
information.

The Shop is taking shape nicely, and there is (as always) a lot to
look at. Especially with graduation and wedding season upon us, you
may find the perfect, and perfectly unusual gift for someone you love.
There will be demonstrations of the new Flying Wish Paper at
Thursday's opening, but if you can't make it, ask for one anytime.
We've also got some other new goodies in -- ice cream sandwich soap
may be just the thing for pleasing someone in your life!

“INCARNATIONS” Featured at The Studio

The Studio, the alternative gallery and art space located at 84 Union Avenue in Laconia, is featuring the work of intermedia artist C.M. Judge for the month of May. Judge’s installations, part of her series called “INCARNATIONS”, feature works that have photographic roots. Says Judge, “I enjoy the meditative aspect of looking deeply at things around me through the lens of a camera and then taking those images and distilling the enduring, resonant parts arranging them in ways that cause me to simultaneously relate to them physically, emotionally and spiritually.” Judge is fond of saying, 'Art is spirit made visible.' Her work often focuses on universal themes of identity, intimacy and spirituality. Judge runs Moongate Studio in Fitchburg, MA where she creates paintings, installations, video and stained glass. Judge has an international following.

At the opening on Thursday May 12th from 5pm – 7pm Judge is also inviting any local visual artists to collaborate in an international video collage project, “The Artists’ Love Song”. Judge co-curates FemLink with French artist Veronique Sapin, and this project is part of that. More information can be found at femlink.org C.M. Judge is currently collaborating with the 7th and 8th graders at Barnstead Elementary School on a large scale environmental sculpture project as a visiting artist.

Space for Rent!

As we approach the 2-year anniversary of The Studio, Elizabeth & I are excited about its continuing transformation and development. We are creating designated retail space, The Shop, devoted to unusual and reasonably priced treasures; more information about that soon.

We’re also offering space-sharing to a kindred art spirit. This is a great opportunity to be part of the funky & beguiling atmosphere that The Studio is known for. The rent is $300 a month which includes heat, electricity, lots of natural light, a bathroom, 24-hr access and free parking. We are looking for someone with some daytime availability to help cover The Studio & Shop during our regular hours. Unfortunately, due to lease issues, we can't consider anyone who uses oil paint or any other highly-fumed stuff.

Jump-Start Your Art

As we head out of deep winter and into early spring, March is the
perfect time to “Jump-Start Your Art”. Join artists Melissa McCarthy &
Elizabeth Obelenus at The Studio for a four session workshop. Whether
you have been an artist for years or have trouble spitting the word
“artist” out, “Jump-Start Your Art” will help energize you and give
you confidence.
The sessions will start with “Who Says You Can’t”, to stretch the
concept of what art, and being an artist, is or isn’t. “Become a
[non]Dominatrix” will explore unfamiliar ways of mark-making. Using
and creating prompts will be the focus of “Because I Said So”, and the
final session, “More, More, More” will be a skinny-dipping romp into
the process pool. The sessions are designed to build on each other or
can be taken individually.
If you’re seeking to stretch and grow beyond where you’re usually
comfortable, “Jump-Start Your Art” is a place to begin. The sessions
will run on 4 consecutive Saturdays beginning March 5th, and run from
11am -1pm. Each session is $20, with a discount for a pre-paid
registration for all four sessions at $65. Please contact us to
register in advance regardless of whether or not you will be taking
advantage of the discount. You need only bring yourself and an
openness to play – everything else is provided

"The Pin-Up Show" is February's Hot (Meal) Ticket at The Studio!

Submissions are rolling in every day for "The Pin-Up Show", the
February exhibit at The Studio. So far we've got artists from 5
different states, and 3 countries, and work that ranges from visual
poetry to original mixed media, color copies, black and white copies,
conceptual to realism -- something for everyone. You can see some of
the submissions and read the guidelines at

The show will be up for viewing all during February. On March 1st,
anyone can come in and, for a donation to the local food pantry, leave
with an artwork of their choice. Instead of the usual "starving
artist", this artwork will feed the community -- literally and
figuratively!

The Featured Artist for that night's "Live Studio Audience" is Ericka
Cushing. If you haven't had a chance to check out "Live Studio
Audience", it's a great opportunity to spend a Tuesday evening in the
warm, fun, and funky atmosphere of The Studio while listening to some
great live acoustic music. Podcasts & videos of previous shows are
available at http:www.lindenmusic.net Shows begin just after 6pm, and
go until there's no-one left to play. Local musicians are raving about
the space; Audrey Drake wrote: "...[The Studio] transports you back to
the roaring Mill days with its tall ceilings, old wood floors and
brick walls. There is art everywhere you turn! During the open stage
the space is transformed with cafe tables and candles into an old
school folk room."

Second Annual Holiday Open Studio

It's that time again - Holiday Open Studio! This year there are lots of great alternative gift ideas for Secret Santas and stocking stuffers - don't give another scented candle! Super duper friend of the Studio, Jim Tyrrell is playing in the afternoon, and we'll have goodies all day long. The featured exhibit at The Studio is the New Hampshire Women's Caucus for Art signature small works show, "6x6". All the work is 6" square, and all of it is priced at $66, a great deal for an original work of art by a New Hampshire woman artist. Come spend some time at The Studio this Saturday afternoon from 10-6pm, hear some wonderful music, see some wonderful art and meet some wonderful people, too!

Futon Friday

It's been a week of running about, rather frantically, trying to get ready for Thanksgiving at the house while undergoing the tail-end of a kitchen remodel. I've installed 3 exhibits in the last month, and taken down 2 of them by myself, andandand. It's been a hustle-y, bustle-y time and I am in the mood for some chill-iciousness.

Futon Friday is my answer. It'll be after Thanksgiving, and I am NOT setting foot in a retail establishment, and I have a futon, a tea kettle, stacks of books and heat. If you need some relaxation, feel free to come by and join me. If you're not in the neighborhood, plan your own Futon Friday.

I'm looking at it as an opportunity for reflection before the madness of December sets in, a chance to list the things I'm grateful for - it's a LONG list! - and an activity detox.

Wallowing Wednesday

There seems to be an almost overwhelming amount of bloggage, self-help bookishness and general conversation about Being Happy, Finding The Positive, Overcoming Your Inner Crankiness...you get the idea.

But we all know that some days that just doesn't cut it. For whatever reason, regardless of our intent otherwise, The Universe doesn't go our way, and we usually put a smiley face on anyway and Bravely March On.

I propose that this Wednesday, today, October 6th 2010 and the first Wednesday of every month hereafter be designated "Wallowing Wednesday". We can allow ourselves, for however much time we need in that 24 hour period, to wallow in the unfairness, whether real or perceived, of life in general, our lives in particular. Whatever will allow you to fully appreciate the crap of life, the meanness of others, the line at the coffee shop, the person who cut you off in traffic, the Every-Effing-Red-Light-Between-Home-And-Destination-When-You're-Already-Running-Late...whatever it is that brings out your inner cranky, tantrum-disposed child: allow it. Tears? Fine. All day weepies? Fine. Five minutes of uncensored anger? Fine. A quiet day under a blanket with tea and a journal, or a good book, or a bad book? Be my guest.

My point is, that ignoring the fact that we don't always feel all sunshine and lollipops does a disservice to the fullness of Really Living. Today, I've got a to-do list that runs almost a full page, some Big Tasks, some little ones, but I'm giving myself both the time and the permission to wallow for a bit...then I'll crank some tunes, hula hoop for 5 minutes and get over it. 500 Days Countdown

So according to Time and Date, after today there are only 50 days left until the 500 Days celebration here at The Studio. Lined up music (thanks to Soap Opera and Six-legged Cougar), am counting up coins for a raffle (500 coins, over $20 in quarters alone!), and doing conversion calculations...500 cc = 1/2 liter, for beverage serving purposes, for example.

Art available for (the equivalent of) 500 pennies, 500 nickles, dimes and quarters... it's been interesting to see how that works out, and fun, and a reminder that a lot can be accomplished in 500 days....

500 minutes is 8hrs 20 minutes of fun, art, music and celebration of 500 Days at The Studio -- see you there on November 13th!

Irreverentia; New-ish Works at The Studio

"Faith without works is dead."

Since I began creating art, my faith has infused my work, whether I intended it or not. The large mixed media pieces on the wall were done after 9/11, but are not explicitly “post-9/11” pieces. The sculptural “Fear” piece is recent, and questions whether fear makes us invisible – how much can we hide behind fear?

“Irreverentia” is an on-going exploration of the lives of saints, and, as the title suggests, is not a serious study. I read stories of the lives of saints as research, then create my own interpretation of them, with my tongue firmly lodged in my cheek. I see a clear difference between disrespect and irreverence. While the former is often mean-spirited and sometimes ill-informed, the latter has both humor and respect, and it is this that I hope viewers will take away.

I explain to people that I am a “practicing Catholic” because I am not very good at it. Both my art work and my sense of humor are deeply a part of this practice.

The Amazing Melissa Morrison is once again teaching her bellydancing class at The Studio - fun and exercise!

Belly Dance Basics- A Beginner level class

You will be learning the basic moves/dance vocabulary used in cabaret style belly dance. You will learn how to execute the moves using the correct muscles to give your dance a “tight” look and to prevent injury. Veil work may be covered (space dependant). Music / Beat structure, in relation to your dance, will be touched upon. Basic zill rhythms will also be covered.

My new-found energy for being in the studio is paying off, and the week began with a commission for a calligraphic piece for the local synagogue. I ended up having to re-work it a few times, and just when I thought it was ready for the client to take, he found a spelling error in a name that was mine, and another that was his in the original correspondence. In re-doing it, though, I was able to add an additional element which pleased him, and solve a couple of "technical difficulties", which pleased me. It's been a long time since I've been in the studio for days in a row really working at art, and this is giving me heart and a much-needed boost of art energy!

New Day Dawning

I am ashamed, abashed and woefully dismayed at the date of my last post! When I started this blog, it was my intent to post at least every week. But life, the universe and everything, as it will, had other plans and the spring and summer went by in a whirlwind of...of...of...a lot of family events, a couple of health issues, including whiplash that had me knackered for a couple of weeks, anesthetizing heat waves, and the worst culprit, that Voice that says, "What the hell do you think you're doing? Who the hell do you think you are?" The Voice that sounds like a combination of Christopher Walken and Gilbert Gottfried on their worst days, with maybe a touch of old, wheezy Brando. The Voice that ties your hands, that fogs up your clear vision with clouds of doubt, and that never shuts up!

Now I'm ready to stop listening, to start again, again, to figure it out, to boldly go, etc., etc. There is an exhibit up a few blocks from The Studio, a window front display in an attorney's office, that's a wonderfully well-thought-out and provocative conceptual piece. No flowers. No loons. No sunsets. No kidding! And it gives me such a feeling of hope!

So, where do I go from here? Next month I'm showing some of my own conceptual work at The Studio. I have an appointment to talk with another artist about showing his work with its fantastic "street art" aesthetic. I'm curating an exhibit at another gallery of the "A Book About Death" show that was in New York City last year and is in the permanent collection of MoMA. And then?

I have no doubt that The Voice will be persistent, and no doubt that some days I will be tempted to listen. But I hope that my own triumphant "YES!" and "YES!" again will drown it out, make it a hoarse whisper, easier and easier to ignore.

It Might As Well Be Spring

We've had days of mighty rain here in central New Hampshire, followed by some cold, clear ones...and more rain to come. And like the weather I feel mercurial and unsettled, unsure. But there is promise in the air, and I try to find promise in my heart, too. A warming, an opening - green shoots from dormant roots...watching, waiting for the bloom.

Catching Breath

Officially, the vernal equinox is a month away, but I am already restless for change, growth...anything. It seems impossible that I've been in the studio since July - almost 8 months. Having had children, I know a little about gestation, and I suppose it's not coincidental that the coming of Spring corresponds to a 9 month period of change, development and, yes, some confusion.

I am overwhelmed. I have a huge, wonderful space, and all sorts of swimmy, unfocused ideas for using it. I've had classes and workshops, some ongoing, and it's great to have that energy there. My town is ripe for change, and I can help effect it, but I am plagued by fear and self-doubt, and that can be paralyzing. I feel...I feel...

I feel the same way I did as I approached the 9-month mark of my pregnancies. Excitement, fear, joy, grief, uncertainty, pride. The only thing certain was that change was imminent, and that nothing would be the same again.

So in these last days of winter, I am catching breath, gathering strength, and wondering how this birth will be.

That Covers It

The current show at The Studio, "That Covers It: Album Cover Graphics as Art" is getting a steady flow of visitors, and Jeff Milroy, the curator and collector is doing a wonderful job promoting and publicizing it. There is an opening reception on Sunday January 31st, with music, food and beverages - come and enjoy!

That Covers It

The music that should be playing as you're reading this all comes from artists whose albums are featured in the current exhibit "That Covers It: Album Cover Graphics as Art" at The Studio through February 15th. Jeff Milroy, the curator and collector, has selected 36 albums from his collection of 104 to display. Note: the albums were chosen for their cover graphics, not for the music...as, in some cases, you'll be able to hear!

The exhibit is fascinating, visually stunning, and may bring back memories. At least one person has seen it and remembered having one image or another on a t-shirt. There will be a reception on Sunday January 31st from 1-4pm; Jeff will be on hand to play some music from the rest of his extensive collection, answer questions, and share in the good times that are inherent in an artist's reception, or in this case, curator's reception! It's an amazing concept for a collection, and I hope you'll come check it out. Call 603-455-8008 for winter hours, or come by for food, drink and music on the 31st.

The Birth of a (Procrasti)Nation

I cleaned my kitchen at home - counters, table, stovetop - and hand-washed all the dishes instead of using the dishwasher. I drove to a coffee place 3 miles out to get coffee, then went the long way around town instead of through. Searched for, and eventually found, the charger for my iPod. Made 2 phone calls. Made a third. Got some water. Noticed the plants needed water. Picked off all the dead foliage. Moved the same basket around five times. Added songs to the Playlist. Added the playlist to the blog. Googled a local restaurant. Picked loose threads from the seams of my skirt. Washed my glasses with soap and water instead of just a quick breath and polish. Convinced myself that starting at 11am to work on my drawing was fine. Now convinced that noon is. Is that sand all over the floor? Where's my broom...?

Do you know how sometimes someone will drop a lovely verbal gift in your lap? That happened today, thanks to my friend E. Her comment: "You have to state intention. So you can say in the morning, 'I intend to have a good day today', and then you've set yourself up to have a good day."

My take on it is that sometimes a good day is full of productivity, creative energy and purpose...and sometimes a good day is spent in pajamas with tea and a book. If you leave the definition and the possibility open, a good day is always attainable.

Here's Hooping

The new year has begun, first with a bang, then a whimper; I spent New Year's Day with a migraine. All of my carefully pre-conceived ideas about meditating, creating space, making plans, lists, quietly reflecting on the new year's potential...into the Puke Pot.

Now I wonder if maybe that wasn't the best thing for me. After years of being concerned with an office job involving lots of detail, and "search and rescue" missions that I took on regardless of whether or not it was specifically "my job", I am trying to explore "macro-managing". Not to say that attention to detail isn't a good thing from time to time; I know how to do that. But I need to learn to see larger pictures, let go a little, enjoy process without trying to control the product too much.

So today there was a Hula Hoop making workshop at The Studio, half a dozen ladies spanning 3 generations, playing, laughing, working...and about 3 turns into applying the tape I realized that I didn't have to create The Perfect Hoop, just my perfect hoop, and suddenly released myself into what I was doing instead of thinking that every turn of the tape was a life-or-death matter. I had a wonderful time, re-learned how to work my body in a way that I hadn't done since I was a child, and remembered that breathing and laughing are as important to what I want to do in the New Year as my lists and carefully laid plans had been before they were...um...thrown out.

Now I am thinking that loosening a little, laughing a lot and letting some things go is what I need to remember to keep 2010 on the right track. Here's hooping!

Holy Daze

It is unbelievable that the Open Studio and all of the Holiday Buzz is over...sort of. There was so much going on, and there is still so much that's whirling around in an exciting swirl of possibility that I feel like I am in a Holy Daze.

The New Year will bring good things to The Studio, to my life, to my city, and I am excited for all the developments. Looking forward to seeing more old friends, making more new ones, and general merriment and joy!

Open Studio (thrilling) Updates

In spite of today's snow, I've gotten a lot accomplished, especially if one counts drinking coffee and napping (never mutually exclusive!) as "a lot". The Open Studio is shaping up so wonderfully: Donna Catanzaro is bringing her Saint Cards and other work, including her book "Do We Have Enough Stuff Yet?", Kate Lemay is doing some new work, Cathy Brennan is bringing stuffed "Snow Folk" modeled more after Calvin & Hobbes than Frosty. Stunning Stacey Lucas is bringing her Grown Up Hula Hoops and more, and there will be sign-ups for a Hoop Making Workshop at The Studio on January 2nd. Gail Smuda is bringing some of her wonderful work, including her not-to-be-missed felted bead bracelets. And Jim Tyrell is bringing his CD's with him; don't forget he is playing from 3 o'clock until he has to go...He'll be at the Black Cat Cafe in Laconia later Saturday night. Sunday will bring more fun; it's also the Open House Day for all of the Downtown Laconia shops, so you'll be able to wander across the river to hit the local stores. Santa and Mrs. Santa will be at the Historic Belknap Mill, too!

Time is on my side

Having given notice at my "day job" has given me newfound energy for working at/in The Studio. Yesterday was the first day of training my replacement, and by agreement with my boss I left work at 1pm and was in the studio by 1:30. I've had so little time during weekdays to be there, it was a thrill, and I had 3 visitors who saw the notice that it was open on the landing and made the trek up to see it.

The time feels both essential and luxurious....

It isn't often that one is given the opportunity to use one's creative energy in a way that isn't predominantly self-serving, but when the opportunity arises, boy, is it a nice thing! A desire to create change in My Fair City, fortuitous introductions and (almost) indefatigable optimism are conspiring to change my life in big, happy ways!

Someone asked me recently if the new studio took up more of my time. I had to explain that I'd love for the new studio to take more of my time, that I'd love to have more time to give it. I love being in the space; I would love even more if the studio could be the first place I went in the morning to begin my day. Right now it's a challenge to balance The Day Job and the energy it requires (some days it takes more than others...) with The House, The Dog, The Friends, The Other Commitments... with the time I'd like to be working in The Studio.

I realize that, in the grand scheme of things, I've only been there a few months and have done quite a lot of settling in. There are currently two activities, Tai Chi and Bellydancing, that are using the space, with more to come. But I get impatient, and want to go-go-go and do-do-do (and it's odd that those 2 words don't rhyme...). Learning, in many ways, to appreciate process -- damn it!

Home on the Range

I don't know what it is about New York City, but the energy, especially the art energy is unmistakable, and (unfortunately) un-bottle-able. Last week I was there for the opening of A Book About Death at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery (http://abookaboutdeath.blogspot.com/) and for a FluxFest performance at The Boiler in Brooklyn. I performed my own original score, "Breath Piece", and assisted with Reed Altemus' performance of Luc Ferien's "Rose Piece" as well as Carol Starr's "Red Circle Piece (for Allan Revich)". I hadn't done any Fluxus performance work before, and had assisted in two pieces at the opening the previous night (Cecil Touchon's "Requiem for a Rubber Band" and Keith Buchholz' spoken word piece (the title of which I can't remember; sorry Keith!) So, why the rambling? My intention for The Studio is to create a space locally where this kind of activity could take place and be happily attended, a place to expose New Hampshire residents (and visitors) to performance work, especially Fluxus work, which can sometimes be more accessible to a wide variety of people than some other forms of performance work. But how to infuse this small New Hampshire city with even a little of the energy of New York?!

That's my dilemma and my challenge, but also my pleasure!

I can't believe that in the 2 days that I've been here I have seen and done more than I have all year at home. Openings, both my own and others, galleries, restaurants, laughter, wine and meeting artists whom I've worked and corresponded with for years "in person" for the first time...it's all been a full and amazing trip.

The hotel where I'm staying (The Jane, http://thejanenyc.com/) is home to one of the hottest bars in town. When we got back from the opening and "afterparty" there were lines of people waiting to get in, bouncers, police escorts. Thankfully I'd brought my key; I brandished it above my head and said, "I'm staying here".... The bouncer took my elbow, hollered "Hotel guest, move, move, hotel guest!"...the doorman hollered " 'otel gaste! 'otel gaste!" -- and the crowds parted. Fortunately, I was wearing my black bar glasses http://www.perpetualkid.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2256, so no one knew it was only me!

I can't wait to use the energy I'm absorbing here to work once I'm back in The Studio. I will try and arrange an exhibit of Book About Death Postcards (http://abookaboutdeath.blogspot.com/) so more people can see them, and I am looking forward to doing some performance work later on! Now to go and get ready for tonight's performance in Brooklyn...

I had my "The Studio is Open" sign out on the landing yesterday, and a few Lonely Wanderers made the trek upstairs to see it. Perhaps I need to put out a disclaimer: "No paintings of loons and canoes; sorry!" The distress was palpable; I can only imagine the inner conversations ("It said it was an art studio. There are no paintings of birch trees or anything that looks like something! I don't know; I don't think this is really art...oh, but she does have peppermints in a bowl. I'll just take one, say thank you, and head out now....")

Perhaps I'll consider the peppermints a participatory installation piece....

Process

A full sheet of Rives BFK and a 15 year old niece can go a long way toward detaching one from product. Haven't enjoyed working for the sake of working like that in a long time...and ended up with a mixed-media drawing I really like. It is an interesting realization that the end result of good process can be more satisfying that a pre-conceived notion of what the end result should be. It also feels like one of those lessons that I will need to keep learning....

Two months almost already

Tuesday, August 18th will mark the two month anniversary of physically taking possession of my studio. It was the day I handed over the signed lease and a check with a lot of numbers on it and got, in exchange, the keys (two; one for the standard lock on the front door, and the other for the padlock - padlock!? - on the heavy industrial door) and a world of permission and possibility. My generous, wonderful landlord allowed me to use the space "rent free" for the remainder of June, beginning the lease in earnest on July 1st. Since I had told my prior landlord that I would be out by July 1st, what ensued was a frenzy of what is best described as major schleppage. Stuff down the stairs from the old space, into the car (or cars, depending on how successful I'd been enlisting friends and family), across town, then up the two flights to the new space...hot, sweaty, rewarding work, but work nonetheless.

So, I was moved, but not moved in. July was the month for arranging, rearranging, packing back up, unpacking, hanging, taking down, drilling, swearing, and walking miles back and forth, back and forth. Does this sound like a complaint? It shouldn't; my old space was about a 10th the size of the new, and I couldn't back up without hitting my head on the sloped ceiling. In The Studio I can run laps, should I desire, and couldn't hit my head on the ceiling if I tried...unless I really tried, and involved a trampoline, or perhaps a bungee cord.

Now August is half over and I find myself making inroads toward making art again, tiny inroads toward working large, and tinier inroads still toward making the space available to others who might like to use it, creating an alternative to the status quo in my little corner of the world.

Blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda, and so on and so forth, and so it goes: I'll keep you posted. Toodle-pip! xo
