Artists Mike Lewis and Tom Konieczko are exhibiting together during the month of February. Using paper, boards and index cards they have compiled a body of work that is quirky and sweet, biting and witty, and completely engaging. Come for the opening on Friday the 7th and meet both artists, enjoy refreshments and a laugh. On Sunday the 9th Mike Lewis will be at The Studio from noon until 4 for an artist's talk and sketchbook workshop. Using tips and tricks from his class at the Maine College of Art, he'll work with anyone on, as he says, "means to evade the blank page".

Happy new year! January is half over, but things are just getting started here at the studio. On the gallery wall through February 6th, "Calendar Year", a series of graphite drawings that abstract the number of people who came into the shop, is on display. I'm making room for new things in the shop, so there are plenty of goodies on sale, and I usually have chocolate available for the asking. See you at The Studio!

I've got to rearrange and inventory, both physical and mentally, and hang the January exhibit and get ready to rock the New Year. Artist Kate Lemay's beautiful jewel-like paintings are adorning the gallery wall through the end of the year in this ambitious exhibit that is only a small fraction of the work in this series, The Free-Time Project. What began as an exploration of what she could do to keep practicing art-making with two small children and a full time job has become a spiritual and artistic exploration that's taking on a life of its own. Kate's shown parts of the show in Los Angeles California, is showing here in Laconia now, and has long-range plans for the series which include a full exhibit of all 3780 paintings internationally in a museum show. You can watch a time-lapse video of her process here, or better yet, come in and see the 147 pieces in person. Kate will be here on Sunday the 8th of December from noon to 4pm to visit with people and talk about her work, and Heather Cone will be here playing her crystal bowls - a relaxing alternative to holiday shopping madness.

But the shop will be open, and full of fun gift ideas for even your most difficult giftee - come in and browse, ask for help, sit for a moment...The Studio is a little out of the way, but a lot out of the ordinary!
But using language to create poetry that is meant to be interpreted by the eyes is artist Andrew Topel's practice, and his visual poetry is in the gallery at The Studio through November 1st. Vispo (the short-hand version of "visual poetry") uses words and/or letters to create art that challenges the viewer's concept of both visual art and language.
The current exhibit at The Studio is "Just Like Us Only Not" photographer Evelyn Lamprey's intimate look at Graceland, Elvis Presley's legendary home. Take a step back in time and see what makes Graceland both "Just like us" in it's scale and "only not" in some of its over-the-top decor. The images will be on display in the gallery through September. Come to the opening reception on September 12th beginning at 6 and listen to songs that Elvis might have listened to, and see the work of master barber Bree Henderson from Polished and Proper Barbershop and Shave Parlor, who is bringing Elvis-ishes to Downtown for the evening! For a limited time, you can indulge in a dessert special at Local Eatery, a peanut butter and banana Monte Cristo finished with homemade praline ice cream, local honey and candied local bacon - a delicious tribute to The King!

On Friday the 13th, The Studio is hosting a Trunk Show by Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture. For one day only, Grace's fun and funky up-cycled dresses and men's shirts will be available for you to try on and find the perfect one for your closet. Grace will be in Laconia from 2 pm until 7 pm Friday, then packs up to go to the Art Fair at the Squam Art Workshops in Holderness for Saturday night. She's offered to come back (!) in the winter to teach us how to make our own Folk Couture in a workshop; let me know if you might be interested.

For the month of August, Dan Daly's exhibit "Scenic
Roots" is showing at The Studio. His work
is crafted from wood scraps left over from his work as an award-winning
set designer for the Winnipesaukee Playhouse. These intimate, often
intricate works bring together Dan's talent as a designer and builder
and his vision as an artist.

When we go to the theater, we take in the whole
experience: the actors, the lights, the script, the set. We don't
usually think about the fact that the set often begins as raw lumber. Dan is able to see the art that is inherent in both the large
stage-crafted pieces and the small remnants of construction. The work is lovely, a great combination of raw and finished material,
and beautifully constructed. Two of the pieces sold
as he was installing, a good indication of how accessible the
work is.

The work is up through August 31st; the opening reception is Thursday August 1st from 5-8 pm.
The Studio is becoming synonymous, for better or worse, as a place where you never know what will be going on. This month is no exception. According to Wikipedia, "A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring
host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste
and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation". Second Sunday Salons are beginning July 14th, with jazz wizard Neal Martin on keyboard, and his unique interpretations (and encyclopedic knowledge!) of the Great American Songbook. There will be refreshments, special sales, and the courtyard will be open for your enjoyment, too, weather permitting.

Sunset Watching Parties continue to be popular, and the next one is this coming Tuesday, July 16th. Join the crowd on the top of the municipal parking garage in Laconia (the entrance is off Beacon Street East) around 7:30 for bubbles, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk and who knows what else. The next one is in two weeks, on July 30th...see you there!
Artist Gerald Auten is showing his large abstract graphite drawings at The Studio through May 30th. Auten, whose work is also currently on exhibit at Hood Museum, is an award-winning artist and faculty member at Dartmouth College. The surfaces of Auten's work are lovely, rich, and deep, and take months to develop. To allow viewers to fully appreciate the drawings, the work will be pinned directly to the gallery wall at The Studio without the intervention of traditional framing with glass. An opening reception will be Thursday April 18th from 5-7pm at The Studio, 50 Canal Street.

Artist Kirk Membry sees things in a big way. In his professional
photography practice he is contracted by organizations such as the Mount
Washington Observatory and NBC Sports to do 360 degree panoramic photos
or "panos". In "Terra Vegrandis", his current exhibit, he takes the big picture and shrinks it to
create the "tiny earth" prints that are featured.

In images that may conjure the familiar cover illustration of "The
Little Prince", he gives viewers a playfully disorienting look at
the world. The scale and perspective are both delightful and a little
disarming. I think you'll have fun exploring these little worlds.

There is an opening reception for the artist this Saturday, March
16th, from 11am to 2pm. "Terra Vegrandis" is at The Studio through April 13th. Regular hours are 10am to 5pm
Wednesday through Friday, Saturday 10am-3pm. For an appointment at

have created a fictional character named The Saintly Tourist, whose journey is
based on Lewis and Clark’s expedition out west, following rivers and camping
out for two years in western America. I was enthralled by their story and the
journals they kept and the relatively peaceful passage through other people’s
lands. The Saintly Tourist is someone who is respectful and reverent toward the
landscapes she passes through. I create objects, usually 3-dimensional, often
using found objects to evoke aspects of her story. The artwork, rather than being
a literal transcript, is meant to be an evocative, poetic reference toward the
Tourist’s journey."

Because of a fire in another unit in the old building on Union Avenue, The Studio has had to move to brand-new digs in beautiful downtown Laconia, right on Canal Street in the arts district. Number 50 is now a bigger, brighter shop, with even more fun stuff and, through Christmas, the bright and funky artwork of Stacey Lucas. Her show, "Trash to Treasure", combines her quirky words, great color sense and vibrant subjects in an exhibit that's perfect for these darkening winter days. All of the work is for sale and original art is a great holiday gift idea. Stacey's even agreed to replenish work that sells, so you can take your purchases with you, and come back often to see what's new!
The
September exhibit at The Studio is "Lacunae", photography by Evelyn
Lamprey. These quiet black and white images are a perfect way to ease
out of summer, and wander into the possibilities they present.

The dictionary defines lacunae as "an empty space or missing part". The
evocative images invite the viewer to speculate on the missing part. Is
it the sitter on the bench? The water in a glass? You won't leave
unaffected by the beauty and connection in these photographs. "Lacunae"
is Evelyn's first solo exhibit.

The exhibit opens with a reception for the artist on Thursday September
6th from 5-8pm. The work will be on view through October 6th.

The
Studio is regularly open Wednesday through Friday 10 am to 5 pm, and
Saturday 10 am to 3pm. As always, you can call for additional hours or
an appointment. The Shop is full of surprises, with goodies arriving
almost every day, and it's always a fun place to browse and shop. New
consigners include Monkey Chow's Aaron Kovalcsik, whose quirky prints, buttons and notecards fit in wonderfully with my sense of humor! I've also teamed up with Bubble and Flame soaps,
and the scents and colors are a treat. I'm low on inventory right now,
but Sarah's bringing more by, and you can find her at the Saturday
Laconia Farmer's Market at the city hall parking lot.

The best way to find out about what's going on is to "like" The Studio on Facebook.
There you'll find news about what's new in the shop as well as other
events going on. The Sunset Dessert Parties on top of the Laconia
parking garage have been a hit, and I think we can continue through
September. The dates will be the 11th and 25th - rough "start" time is
6:30 (because the sun sets earlier). Come for the fun - lots of photos
out there of the great chalk drawings, music and sparklers!

Happy September, and see you at The Studio! The Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05946617929321339384noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7974791125016658867.post-68583231079573817742012-08-06T15:00:00.001-04:002012-08-06T15:00:55.800-04:00"I Shall Not Want: A Holy Irreverent Display"

Artist Mike Lewis returns to The Studio with another wonderful installation, this one exploring religious iconography. Mike's unique style of cross-hatching illustration is applied to The Last Supper, inviting a new look at a familiar image. For the opening reception, Mike and Chef Michael Beers are collaborating to provide food as part of their Speakeasy Dining (ad)venture. Information about a 7-course "Last Supper" closing event for this exhibit will be posted later.

Also at the opening reception, traveling band Walter Mitty And His Makeshift Orchestra will be making an east coast appearance on their summer tour. Come and enjoy art, food and live music at The Studio on Thursday August 9th...things start around 7:30 after the Laconia Outdoor Market, and there is plenty of free parking downtown!

"I Shall Not Want" will remain on view through September 1st. For updates on the closing event call 603-455-8008 or check here (best way).
